IPCR Commends DG Of OACPS Over Visit…Says Mandate Of Institute Is To Promote Peace

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has commended the Director General of Organization of African Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), His Excellency, Georges Rebeto Pinto Chikoli over his visit to the Institute.

The Institute also told him that the job of the Institute is to promote peace, identify conflicts and also engage in intervention.

Addressing the OACPS DG and his entourage at the Institute, Abuja, the Director General of IPCR, Dr. Bakut T. Bakut, said that IPCR has achieved alot in the country and Africa.

He said that the Institute has helped to identify and mediate in conflicts across the country and Africa countries.

He disclosed that the Institute has expanded, adding, “we don’t just do research, we also do direct intervention.”

Aside identifying conflict, Dr. Bakut said that the Institute has gone into communities to interven in conflicts, and has also engaged in mapping conflict areas.

He said that the Institute actually identified what has degenerated into what is called Boko Haram and bandits today.

According to him, “ours is to mediate and promote peace. We have been negotiating peace with conflict communities.”

Noting that poverty is the driver of conflict and insecurity, Dr. Bakut told the visiting OACPS DG that the Institute will need support and collaboration especially in this election period.

In his remarks, the OACPS DG, Chikoli noted the importance of peace and security.

He said: “No country can develop without peace and security. We need to understand why there is conflicts and how to respond.”

Insisting that there is need to mitigate these challenges and also need the technical knowledge of areas of conflict and the conflict itself, Chikoli said that nature needs to be understood and why conflict takes place.
