Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, Director-General of Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, delivered a presentation at the 2-Day Regional Dialogue on “Strengthening Capacities for Promoting Efficiency in the Implementation of the Accra Initiative (AI) in West Africa and the Sahel”. This crucial Regional Dialogue was jointly organized by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), the Office of the National Security Adviser, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Government of Japan.
Dr. Ochogwu’s presentation focused on the theme, “Community Initiatives within the Accra Initiative: Providing a Pathway”. He highlighted the alarming increase in violent conflicts and insecurity caused by terrorist groups and other armed factions, which has led to devastating loss of lives and severe humanitarian crises in West Africa and the Sahel region. He emphasized the urgent need for strategic, community-based initiatives within operational framework of Accra Initiative. These initiatives are essential for fostering peace, ensuring security, achieving stability, and promoting socio-economic development in the region.
Dr. Ochogwu further stressed the importance of justice, equality, quality education, social inclusion, consistent dialogue and empowerment of citizens across the AI Member States. He underscored that building trust between the communities and law enforcement agencies is critical to countering inflammatory narratives, preventing radicalisation, and reducing vulnerability of citizens. Additionally, Dr. Ochogwu advocated for the integration of forgiveness, healing and psycho-social support services for the victims of terrorism and violent extremism. These measures, he explained, are vital to rebuild resilience and fostering a sense of unity within affected communities across the region.
Dr. Ochogwu finally called for collective and coordinated efforts by all peace stakeholders in the region and beyond towards realizing the Accra Initiative’s overarching goals.
Together, we can make West Africa and Sahel region great!
