IPCR Strengthens Nigeria’s Conflict Prevention Through National Early Warning System.

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution has reinforced Nigeria’s Conflict Prevention strategy with the rollout of the National Conflict Early Warning and Early Response System (NCEWERS).

Speaking during a media briefing at the Early Warning Situation Room in Abuja, the Director-General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, described the initiative as a major step toward shifting Nigeria’s Conflict Management approach from reactive crisis response to proactive, intelligence-driven intervention.

The system leverages technology and community participation to detect early warning signs of conflict, enabling timely responses by security agencies and relevant government institutions. Through real-time reporting platforms, community monitors, and grassroots peace structures, the framework empowers citizens to play a central role in preventing violence and promoting dialogue, mediation, and reconciliation.

The initiative operates through a coordinated structure at National, State, and Community levels, involving government agencies, security institutions, traditional leaders, and civil society groups to strengthen early detection and response to emerging threats.

While highlighting progress made in states such as Plateau, Kaduna, Katsina, Benue and FCT, the Director-General also noted key challenges, including weakened traditional institutions and gaps in local governance, stressing the need to strengthen grassroots capacity to sustain peace and stability nationwide.
