IPCR Celebrates Landmark Gender Inclusion As Amina Zemo Emerges ASURI Chair
The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has hailed the election of Barrister (Mrs.) Amina Zemo as Chairperson of the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutes (ASURI), describing it as a powerful endorsement of inclusion, competence, and merit.
In a statement issued by the Head of IPCR’s Gender, Peace, and Security Unit, Ms. Grace Awodu, the institute congratulated Zemo on her emergence, noting that this achievement marks a significant step forward for gender representation in union leadership.
“We heartily congratulate Barrister (Mrs.) Amina Zemo on her election as Chairperson of ASURI. This milestone is more than just a win for gender—it is a clear statement in favour of inclusion, competence, and merit,” the statement read.
The IPCR also highlighted that, for the first time in its history, both of its staff unions are now led by women, with Comrade Mrs. Caroline Dakut currently serving as Chairperson of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).
“This is a proud moment for IPCR. It demonstrates that the institute is not just preaching gender equity, but actively living out the values of inclusion and women’s empowerment,” the statement added.
The institute further commended the growing recognition of women’s capacity to lead at all levels, saying, “when women lead, excellence follows. This milestone reflects our commitment to growth, equity, and true transformation.”
Echoing a popular Igbo saying, the institute reaffirmed its belief in the power of the girl child “Nwa Nwanyi Bu Ihe Ukwu – The Girl Child is a Great Thing.”
The IPCR urged continuous investment in training, supporting, and empowering girls and women, emphasising that their leadership can drive meaningful progress across all sectors.
